Welcome To Pre-AP English II

2016-2017

Based on the TEKS for the state of Texas, in English II, we focus on the following skills: Reading, where students read and understand a wide variety of literary and informational texts; Writing, where students compose a variety of written texts with a clear controlling idea, coherent organization, and sufficient detail; Research, where students are expected to know how to locate a range of relevant sources and evaluate, synthesize, and present ideas and information; Listening and Speaking, where students listen and respond to the ideas of others while contributing their own ideas in conversations and in groups; and Oral and Written Conventions, where students learn how to use the oral and written conventions of the English language in speaking and writing. The standards are cumulative--students will continue to address earlier standards as needed while they attend to standards for their grade. In English II, students will engage in activities that build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen their reading, writing, and oral language skills. Students should read and write on a daily basis.

Bulldogs Need to Know

Supplies:  2 compositions books w/cardboard covers: 100 pages (just the black and white kind...we will create covers for them in class), a notebook/binder of your choice, blue/black ink pens, loose-leaf paper with a least 26 lines

Each nine weeks, major grades will be based on:  independent reading, a piece of writing completed using the workshop process, vocabulary/word study, application of appropriate research skills, and a district common assessment.

I can't wait to hear about all the books you read!  Love that discussion in class!!
 

DAILY HOMEWORK:

  • Article of the Week
  • Read a minimum of 20 minutes (move toward 1 hour) from your Independent Reading (IR) selection. Bring this text to class daily.
  • Study vocabulary; it is cumulative.  
  • Anything assigned during class.

Final Draft Submission Requirements for all MAJOR Pieces of Writing

  • 12pt font (Times New Roman)
  • Write/Type on the FRONT side of the paper only.
  • MLA formatted name and header
  • Internal citations use MLA format
  • Works Cited page must use EASYBIB.COM
  • double-spaced
